Shovel Slide
Located just east of the Twin Slides on Teton
Pass, Shovel Slide has buried more than one
vehicle. Above, a Wyoming Department of Transporation
(WYDOT) cat helping to remove snow from an
earlier slide was buried in January of 1966,
thus earning the slide path its name. In
the photo to the right, compare the size
of a vehicle on the plowed road with the
depth of the avalanche debris and fracture
lines.
Between 1991-92 WYDOT installed a Gaz-Ex
system to help it monitor and control avalanches in the Teton Pass area. Three propane/oxygen
exploders were constructed on Glory Bowl
and a fourth on Twin Slide. According to
WYDOT, the system is fired remotely between
12-15 times per winter season..
